Since the body takes you everywhere, a good start is if the body can move with ease. All organs, joints and muscles perform well on a daily basis. A healthy body feels light and energetic; it does not tire easily. Often, a healthy body has a glow. A healthy body does not succumb to weather conditions, the bug that is going around or stress. A healthy body can protect and prevent the onset of diseases.

Health Is Not Fitness

Do not confuse health with fitness. They are 2 very different aspects of well being. One does not equate to the other. While it is possible to be healthy and not fit and vice versa, we should aim for the balance of both a healthy and fit body.

It is easier to obtain a fit body as it is more straightforward and tangible. A healthy body is much more elusive and complex because out of sight, out of mind. The fitness culture breeds egotism which focuses on the superficial. We are so focused on the external, we lose sight of what’s happening inside. This is why although the fitness culture is growing, we are still faced with a health epidemic.

We Only Think We Know

The truth is we don’t understand health and what it means to be healthy. We live in survival mode, operating in a sub standard manner, accepting mediocrity.

There is so much information out there it is easy to get lost and confused. We either get stunned with information overload and don’t do anything. Or we follow trends without proper understanding. Either way, we have lost that connection to our human body and don’t know how to help it.

What is health?

In trying to reconnect with ourselves, let’s get down to basics and put into context the meaning of a healthy body. Not what you think it means.

Oxforddictionaries.com defines ‘Health’ as:

  1. The state of being free from illness or injury.
  2. A person’s mental or physical condition.
  3. Used to express friendly feelings towards one’s companions before drinking.

The World Health Organization (WHO) defined health as “A state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”

Health is the state of our human body in relation to the world we live in.

What is the human body?

According to Wikipedia, “The human body is the entire structure of a human being. It is composed of many different types of cells that together create tissues and subsequently organ systems. They ensure homeostasis and the viability of the human body.”

The human body is a collection of cells.

As the Buddha said, “To keep the body in good health is a duty, otherwise we will not be able to keep our mind strong and clear.” The mind is connected to the body after all.
